In 2015, I packed my bags and took a leap of faith by traveling to Belgium for the very first time. I’d never been outside my home country before, so the entire experience was both thrilling and a bit nerve-wracking. Perhaps it was the promise of world-famous chocolates or the allure of medieval streets and towering cathedrals. Whatever the reason, I had a feeling that Belgium would leave its mark on me—and it certainly did.
A Taste of Freedom
I still remember stepping off the train in Brussels for the very first time. The city buzzed with an energy that was both old-worldly and modern. It was also the first time I’d ever left my parents and my hometown behind, and the sense of freedom was exhilarating—like I could decide my next move on a whim and do anything I wanted.
One minute, you’re strolling past age-old churches; the next, you’re surrounded by sleek, contemporary architecture. It felt like I was walking through history while simultaneously getting a glimpse of the future.
Building Connections
One of my favorite parts of travel is meeting new people, and Belgium didn’t disappoint. Locals were more than happy to share tips about the best places to grab a quick bite of waffles or discover hidden gems off the tourist maps. Through casual conversations—whether in a bustling café or on a train platform—I learned so much about Belgian culture, from their fascinating language dynamics to their deep appreciation of good food and good beer. And even after 10 years, I’m still in touch with the friends I made there—I couldn’t be happier that our connection has stood the test of time!
Looking Ahead
Belgium was a turning point in my travel story, a place that reminded me of how transformative a single trip can be. Each journey I’ve taken since has built on that realization, making me even more determined to see what else is out there. I hope to return to Belgium someday and explore more of its cities, towns, and countryside, savoring every bite of chocolate and every cobblestone underfoot—and I’ll never stop telling the tales of how that first trip changed the way I see the world.
If there’s one lesson I’ve taken from my time in Belgium, it’s that travel can open your mind in ways you never expected. You might leave home feeling excited and come back feeling inspired, forever changed by the places you’ve seen and the people you’ve met. And, for me,
Belgium will always be the place that reminded me how important it is to keep exploring, keep learning, and keep sharing those stories with anyone who cares to listen.
