Salutations, fellow explorers! 🌍 Whether you’re embarking on your Erasmus sojourn or meticulously planning a refined getaway to Belgium, Ghent emerges as a city teeming with enchanting experiences. From sophisticated bars that exude charm to gourmet eateries that tantalize the palate, I’ve meticulously curated a selection of my favorite locales that are simply unmissable.

Let’s immerse ourselves in the exquisite heart of Ghent and uncover the unique allure that makes it a truly remarkable destination for savoring fine cuisine, enjoying artisanal beverages, and indulging in the vibrant cultural tapestry that defines this splendid city! 🥂✨

My Favorite Bars in Ghent 🍹✨

De Dulle Griet: The Perfect Start

Located on Korenmarkt, this iconic bar is a must-visit for any beer enthusiast. What makes it truly special is the quirky tradition: if you want to try a Yard beer, you have to take one of your shoes off! Originally implemented to prevent patrons from walking off with yard glasses when the bar first opened, this tradition has now become a fun and unique part of the De Dulle Griet experience. 🍺

Adding to its charm, De Dulle Griet is named after the renowned painting "Dulle Griet" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting depicts a fierce and determined woman leading an army, symbolizing madness or unbridled enthusiasm. This spirited name perfectly encapsulates the lively and energetic atmosphere of the bar. Just like the painting’s protagonist, De Dulle Griet embodies boldness and a zest for life, making it a vibrant spot where over 500 types of beer await your exploration, including their famous “Genever.”

Do you see how the images are almost the same vibe? It's uncanny. 😁

Vooruit: A Hub of Culture and Memories

Next on my list was Vooruit, a large and versatile venue that truly offers something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for live music, art exhibitions, or just a great selection of drinks, Vooruit has it all.

One evening stands out in my memory: as a Turkish student feeling a bit homesick, I found myself at Vooruit during usual night, sipping my beer and eating, while missing Turkish food of course. Suddenly, I heard Selda Bagcan’s music—a beloved artist back home known for her psychedelic vibes. Hearing her songs played randomly amidst the diverse crowd lifted my spirits immensely. It was a truly romantic moment for me. 🎸🎨

Vooruit’s ability to host a variety of events makes it an ideal place to enjoy a laid-back evening with friends or meet new people in a creative and inspiring setting. Whether you’re seeking a lively night out or a peaceful spot to enjoy some quality time, Vooruit has a unique charm that captures the essence of Ghent’s vibrant culture. 🌟

Why These Bars Stand Out 🌟

While Ghent is home to countless fantastic bars, I won’t recommend more because every spot here offers something amazing. However, De Dulle Griet and Vooruit hold a special place in my heart and truly represent what Ghent has to offer. From the unique traditions and vast beer selection at De Dulle Griet to the cultural richness and personal memories at Vooruit, these bars not only provide great drinks and atmosphere but also create meaningful experiences that make Ghent such a beloved city for both Erasmus students and travelers alike. 🍻✨

Best Places to Eat in Ghent 🍽️

Mayana Chocoladebar 🍫

No trip to Belgium is complete without indulging in its world-famous chocolate, and Maya Chocoladebar is the perfect spot to satisfy your sweet tooth. Located in the heart of Ghent, Maya offers a luxurious selection of handcrafted chocolates that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. From rich truffles to intricate pralines, everything you choose to eat here just delivers. I spent all my money here and still carry the extra kilos it gave me till then 😄—it was truly great! You can check them out here.

Balls & Glory 🍖

Our farewell dinner was at Balls & Glory, making it a place close to my heart. Situated near Vrijdagmarkt, this restaurant is renowned for its giant meatballs that are both hearty and satisfying. The variety of sauces and sides available ensures that every visit is a new experience. The casual yet vibrant atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a relaxed meal with friends, sharing stories and creating lasting memories. If you’re looking for something comforting and delicious, Balls & Glory is your go-to spot! 🍖😋

The rest of my recommendations will include completely local delicious after-the-beer food.

't Hamburgertje bij Ertan

One of my all-time favorite spots in Ghent is 't Hamburgertje bij Ertan. This charming burger joint is located next to one of the busiest bars and the most vibrant going-out street in the city. What sets 't Hamburgertje apart is Ertan (Abi😁) himself—a genuinely positive and warm-hearted person known for being a passionate fan of Galatasaray. His infectious joy spreads throughout the entire city at night, making every visit feel special. I loved eating here so much that I went there all the time! The burgers are legendary, and I still remember every bite. 🍔😊

No visit to Ghent would be complete without tasting the legendary fries at De Gouden Saté Gent. Known as the most famous fries place in the city, De Gouden Saté Gent has a reputation for serving fries that are irresistibly delicious. I found myself eating here almost every day, captivated by the perfect balance of crispy exteriors and fluffy interiors. What exactly they put in their fries remains a mystery, but the taste is something you can't resist 😄.
